Devil in the White City part iii (Lumia Zaman)

April 30, 2008

In this the fair finally opens. The crowd was huge. Burnham was surprised with the turnout. The work of the fair was not complete yet. Ferris wheel was not working as well as some other parts of it. Still the crowd sounded very excited. Holmes opened his new restaurant as his new trap to get more woman . They were all up for his charm.

Burnham was pleased with the turnout. He did not imagine it was going to be that huge. He was glad that everything finally got together and the exposition was ready to go. The ticket money was raised. People from a lot of places came to the fair to see what it has to offer. However the economic depression blew it. It started getting slow eventually.

Soon the closing day came. Prendergast killed President Harrison as a result it wasn’t a festive closing. Eventually the  city became dirty, full of crime, and poverty. This symbolized the white city turning dark and dirty. The president sends in troop to Chicago to cause more order. Also they started to suspect Holmes for the murders and they realized that Holmes was behind those murders.

Devil and the White City part II(Lumia Zaman)

The second part of the book gets very interesting with Holmes Murdering continuously. It surprises me that he does those murder in a cool mind, when reading them even scares me. In this part his next target is Minnie and her sister. However some people started to see Holmes out of his charm. Holmes realized that too and he was aware that is his end. On the other hand Burnham tries his hard to find someone to do the outdo the architecture of The Eiffel Tower, however he has hard time finding realistic design. The fair was not turning into what he wanted. Planning seemed much harder than it seemed. There were unfavorable situations. And with the dedication day on its way, Burnham got really worried.

Devil in the White City: The World’s Fair

April 9, 2008

The  documentary  of The World’s Fair helped to bring the novel Devil in the White City alive. It helped to visualize the World’s fair as a whole and it helped to give more background as to places where Devil in the White City took place. I feel that watching the documentary helped to father my understanding of the novel, it explained some of the things I wanted to know more about. What i found to be the most interesting was how things for the fair where made. Exp. how the Ferris Wheel and how things would go wrong, I found this part to be the most wroth watching.

15-Chicago World’s Fair

April 3, 2008

Before class on Thurs March 27th, read The Devil in the White City, pp. 233-337.  We will watch selections from a documentary on the World’s Columbian Exposition over the next few classes to help you identify items (introduced in The Devil in the White City) that you would like to research further.  The documentary is titled  Expo:  The Magic of the White City and is available in the JC Library (call number T500.B1 E96 2005).  By Friday April 4th at midnight, post an account of those items covered in the documentary you found interesting and potentially worth writing about in your paper.  Remember to check your name (under People) and World’s Fair (under assignments) in the category boxes to the right of the posting area.

Worlds Fair

April 3, 2008

I thought that after hearing about the world fair and seeing the video it would certainly be something i would be interested in seeing. Espically considering the time that it took place in Chicago. I  mean what else are you going to do at that day and age? The most exciting thing there was the amount of lights that were present. And compared to todays standards isnt much more than what you would see on a normal city block. However some of the things that the video talked about from Edison would even today be pretty magnificent to see. I can see why this was such a popular event at the time.

The Magic of the White City

March 31, 2008

After watching the documentary in class I felt that I wish could be there. It looks so beautiful and amazing.  The things that attracted me the most from the Exhibition is are the Carl hall, the statue of the columbian ship, the key that the whole crowd could see, as it reflects on light.  I also liked the Midway Planisance which connected the Johnson Park and the Washington park and was the main area of attraction during the exhibition. To write the paper I am thinking about both prompt 1 and 2. However it seems like I am leaning  towards prompt 2.

Devil in the White City. part 1

March 31, 2008

In the first part of Devil in the White City it starts with an introduction to the Chicago city and the development that has been going around that time. In this chapter mainly the characters are introduced. The characters are Burham, Root, H. Holmes etc. Oh this part we can see that there was a voting  for the columbian exhibition. There was competition between New York and Chicago. At the end the Windy City ( Chicago) wins. All the joy and excitement of hosting the Columbian exhibition , turned out a lot difficult than assumed. Burham with Root got the responsibility to plan the fair’s architecture and their mission was to outcast the Eiffel tower and go beyond the world’s fair at Paris. The economy and weather seemed to be an obstacle however it did not seem like to stop them to plan the exhibition.Another character to notice in this part is H. Holmes. He is a young man who is addicted to woman . He is very nice with people and manipulates  them with his lovely behavior.

Things worth writing about

March 30, 2008

watching the documentary The Magic of the White City during class on Thursday reminded me of the many interesting facts about the Chicago worlds fair. Originally I had seen the movie as an extra credit assignment in the fall semester, but watching it again, sort of refreshed my memory of of the little details which i missed while watching it for the 1st time. the fair had many interesting exhibits which represented many countries from around the world. of the many exhibits present, some of the things which i found interesting and worth writing about in the guided paper was :

the electrical building, which housed the huge dynamo’s of george westinghouse.

The ferris wheel which was originally designed in response to the Eifle tower in paris,

and the Midway Planisance – it is where all the main attractions of the fair was located.

as for the paper, as of right now, i have narrowed my choices down to choice 1 and 2, but so far i haven’t decided which one to actually write about. as of right now, i might be planning to focus on prompt 1, but within the next few days, i will have a better idea.

Devil in the White City- part IV

March 29, 2008

In part IV of the Devil in the White City Larson shows that in the end the Columbian Exposition did more than just cover up the dark city hiding behind the white city but led to the permanent improvement of Chicago and other cities in America. The Chicago fair taught people that cities didn’t have to be “dar, soiled, and unsafe, but also be beautiful as well”. Burnham and other American architects sought to make many of the structures they built for the Columbian exposition a part of the permanent makeup of major cities. This led to the city beautiful movement and modern urban planning in which Burnham was at the head. Innovations, technology, and new discoveries became a part of the daily lives of Americans. The innovations diplayed at the Columbian Exposition didn’t die when the exposition was burned but survived in American architecture and can still be seen today.

Devil in the White City Interesting Items

March 29, 2008

From reading the Devil in the White City and watching the Columbian Exposition I found several interesting items which I would like to encompass in my paper. Both the book and the documentary illustrated how Chicago’s efficiency in business and industry allowed them to pull off the Columbian exposition. In the Chicago Stock Yards they used all the parts of the pig when they slaughtered them and sold them to other businesses. The same image they were trying to escape, “a city build on pigs blood and slaughter”, was the mechanism that allowed them to be efficient in creating the Columus exposition and create a profit even while facing an economic depression. The Columbian exposition was a preidction of what the 20th century would be like, good and bad, just like the Devil in the White City illustrated the positive and negative aspects of industrialization.
