Ghost Map 57-109

In this part of the book, we are introduced to man named John Snow. He is a physician and many other things. He enjoyed learning new things and trying new things. He was a very smart person. At the beginning we learn about his family. Then we find out about how he came up with the anesthesia “ether”, which actually came out to be a success. Also the miasma theory is mentioned. The theory was that all causes of disease was the air and and just the peoples surrounding. As we read more, Snow starts investigating cholera and its causes. He does a great job at the investigations and getting samples of water and other things that could help him.

The Ghost Map- 1-55

In the first part of Ghost Map we learn about the Victorian Age in London and how terrible the environment and the situation is. I can relate this reading to when we watched that short video clip on Victorian Age. Johnson does a great job at giving us reality in this book. The Environment people had to live in was horrible, there was trash, smell and it was just a dirty place. Not only was the environment bad but a bad epidemic started called Cholera Epidemic. Cholera was a horrible disease that was spreading all over London and killing people by millions. The symptoms were terrible; Diarrhea, muscle spasms, dehydration, hypertension, and at the same time, you remain conscious of it all. The Cholera epidemic was taking lives like no other in mostly in Soho. Soho became one of the busiest parts of London. I found it interesting how in the book he mentions people we have studied like Karl Marx and some other people. This book gets more interesting as it develops.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde-transformation

The transformation scene was more interesting to watch from the movie. Both the book and movie described and showed the transformation in the same way. He looked had just drank some poison and it was killing him slowly. The image we see in class doesn’t really show any of the symptoms he goes through during the transformation stage. The picture is simple and plain, plus it doesn’t look like the picture in the movie.  In the movie we also get to see it better how Mr. Hyde is and the personality he possessed after the transformation it was a total opposite of what Dr. Jekyll was. Its interesting how he would just go through the transformation naturally. It took over his complete body.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde-16

The book The strange case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde, didn’t catch my attention at all. It was so detailed abut boring at the same time. It felt like it was never going to end. Now in the case of the movie, it was interesting and even funny. One of the main differences between the book and the movie is that, the book is told in a case like manner, there is a man names Mr. Utterson who seeks to find who Mr. Hyde is. Mr. Utterson doesn’t find out until later in the story who he is. When it came to the movie it was told as a story and one I enjoyed watching. Another difference is the way Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde die in the story is because of suicide and in the movie they get killed by an officer. I found the story interesting in the movie and understood it better than in the book.

World’s Columbian Exposition-15

The book was very detailed about some of the buildings but not as detailed as the video. For my essay i’m doing prompt too and I had selected my two buildings. While watching the movie I was able to collect a lot of the imformation i wnated to incorporate in my essay. The video is very helpful and detailed. It helped me visualize how the fair was set up and what it consisted of . I found out that the machinery building was one of the least visited buildings due to the noise in there. I fing that building to be ineteresting because it has machines from everywhere in the world. The Court of honor was also abother section that grabbed my attention and was talked about alot. The video has really help me get parts of my paper together.

Part 3- The Devil In the white city

This books gets more ineteresting as you read more. The fair started out pretty bad because a lot of the things weren’t finished yet. Most of all the Ferris Wheel wasn’t done which was suppose to be one of the most inetresting part of the fair. The result of the attendance was great and they thought tehy were going to be able to pull off a good fair but after a couple of days the attendance was bad. The economy was also dropping which also caused people to want to stay at home more. Holmes had a great result at his Hotel except that ONLY women were allowed which was very questionable. Many guests begin to disappear and Holmes appeared to be as surprised as them, even though deep down inside he was happy. I was very interested in Midway Plaisance and The Illionois Building because it was suppose to be a very important one. I would like to focus on these two.

Master and Commander

This movie was very interesting. I liked the overall plot of the movie. The fact that they were living on a ship and did everything in there made it very interesting. I was amazed how they were able to live in a ship for so long and just depend on nature. The two main characters were Jack, the Captain and Steven the doctor. jack is very dedicated to his work and seeeks revenge to all the enemies at sea. Steven on the other hand is a maturalist and believes that nature comes before fighting and revenge. They are very good friends but have a disagreement when it comes to Steven wanting to stay in places and explore but Jack wants to go conquer. I didn’t like how children were volunteered to the army and how so many if them died. I was very proud of that boy that got his arm cut-off with no medication or anything. Also the way alot of them found operations and scientfic stuff entertaining. Their ship was pretty trong because it was able to take all the fighting they got into and still look nice. This was an excellent movie and I would recommend it to other people.

Industrial Revolution in Victorian England

In the video we learn about the extraordinary city of Manchester  and the hardships that were going on at the time. It was a city where people had to make money for the lords. The video starts out by telling us some background infromation. It was bad if you were born poor and human nature was destroyed. Many would be very thankful of not having to deal with such times. The jobs that were offered were terrible because people would spend hours and days tending the machinery. Children were given dangerous jobs as well. But supposely it was worse when there weren’t jobs. Books were written about the miseries of Manchester life. In the book Mary Borton, the stories came true as you read them. Living in those times is the worst anyone could be put through. Elizabeth Gascol was the one to actually act and notice what terrible times were going on, but it didn’t change much. Church became a part of their life and probably the best part.

The Years of Rice and Salt- Book 7

In this book we learn about the industrial revolution taking place in India. We start off by learning baout the Konstantiniyye empire which is the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Ismail is a physician who works for the Sultan. We meet them in the first pages when they are talking about The Indian Empire that plans to conquer them. The Sultan ask Ismail for information on the Indian empire and what types of dangers will they be facing. Ismail didn’t know much except what he had heard. The Indian Empire was able to conquer the Ottoman Empire with the type of weapons and machinery they had. The Indian Empire had made some great advancement in technological innovations they had;a superior navy, hot air balloons, fire-powered ships, coal industries, and  shipping industry. They also had some other innovations as well. They used their advancement to protect themselves from future invasion and The Chinese.  In the middle of the story Ismail survives the invasion and goes to work with the Indians on medicine. At the end of the story the start of the World War happens.

The Years of Rice and Salt – Book 4

In book four of the Years of Rice and Salt, we met three scientists; Khalid, Iwang and Braham. They both were interested in alchemy. Khalid would spent hours in his laboratory trying to come up with a way of making gold. When one day he has a demonstration and everyone was watching how he was going to make gold. Sadly, the Khan’s servant notices that the gold was already there and they took Khalid away and were going to kill him. Instead the Khan’s servant told him that Khalid had knowledge and to make Khalid work to benefit the khan.Khalid was sentenced to get his hand cut off. The story goes on with Iwanga and Khalid start making observation and experimenting on all sorts of things. They seek help from people who knew more about it.  When working on something they always had a book in front of them to write down what happened and publish their work. This is an exact view of what truly happen.
